To say I've got wanderlust doesn't even begin to capture the desire to experience new places that will forever live deep in my soul. I've got a million exotic places on my list, but I so often forget about all the adventure that isn't too far from home. To celebrate our anniversary, we booked a short weekend trip down to San Antonio. It wasn't quite the romance or intrigue we got in Greece & Italy, but it was such a sweet weekend packed with fun sights and great eats. The recap:
Y'all know from my honeymoon recap how much I love Airbnb. Especially for quick trips like this one, it's the perfect way to see a new city on the cheap (or have more money to spend on food, lol). We stayed in this awesome historic home just a couple minutes from downtown SA. Lauren & Christopher were nice hosts, the room was clean and the bed was comfy; it was all we needed to sleep in before and after some busy sightseeing. (Seriously, if you haven't used Airbnb, you should. I don't get paid to say this, just love the company. Save $40 off your first trip here.)
We woke up early and headed straight for Revolucion Coffee + Juice. And I swear this place was my spirit animal. It was bright and airy and retro and girly and the menu was absolute perfection. Casmir ordered the Revolucion Latte (espresso + milk with local lavender infused honey) and 2 breakfast tacos – the turkey chorizo, egg, cheese, + avocado lime and the bacon, egg and cheese. I ordered the Mayan Mocha (espresso with almond milk with cocoa, cinnamon and a touch of cayenne) and the Peanut Butter & Jelly Acai bowl but I subbed the granola with chia seeds and cacao nibs. Both were amazing. If I lived in SA, I'm sure I'd be here every darn day to work with a cup of coffee.
After getting fueled up at Revolucion, we drove a little more north to Friedrich Wilderness Park for a hike. We were really impressed with this place! They did a great job with the trails and maps with a great option of easy to difficult loops. Now we're both from California, where a hike means real mountains, but this was the closest we've had to real elevation in Texas. It was a perfect way to breathe in some fresh air, break a little sweat (before stuffing our faces all weekend) and take in the sights of the city.
We met my favorite San Antonio babe, Jessica from Devoted Existence, for lunch and the conversation was just as nourishing as the food itself. Pharm Table is an organic restaurant that sources all their ingredients locally and you can truly taste it in their food. We ordered 3 different dishes and sampled from each and honestly all of them were phenomenal – I really couldn't pick a favorite. The Huaraches, the Quinoa Breakfast Pizza, and the Vegan Sweet Potato Waffles. It was all so colorful and flavorful and honestly just amazing. Just read the menu and you'll understand why it's an absolute must.
Because you can't come to San Antonio and not go to these spots. We paid $7 for the headset tour at the Alamo and to be honest I’m not sure it was worth it. But it was a fun hour of some Texas history; I feel like we can finally call ourselves Texans now after living here for 6 years. We spent some time waltzing around downtown and walked along the Riverwalk for some time. We found a fun spanish bar to watch our precious Horned Frogs lose to Iowa State (yikes, let's just not talk about it), but we mostly just enjoyed taking in the amusement-park-feel of the river.
I had planned for us to go to Ocho for dinner Saturday night, but we filled up from nervous eating chips and salsa at a sports bar while watching the TCU game, so we ended up just passing on dinner. So instead, we headed here for an early breakfast Sunday morning and I'm so glad we did! First of all, the decor of this place is dream-worthy. I really felt like I was in a bar in Havana, minus everyone speaking English, of course. And our breakfast was amazing! He says his oats weren't anything special but I loved my avocado omelette with the arugula salad on the side. It made for a peaceful way to start the morning, but I'm sure this place is totally hopping for dinner time.
After Ocho, we strolled through the historic King William neighborhood, gawking at 200-year-old mansions the German settlers built along the river. They've done a great job of preserving the history and we spent a little time just strolling the streets and reading the plaques.
When I asked for San Antonio recs, the one thing every list had in common was the Pearl. This is an old brewery that's been entirely revitalized – with shops and restaurants and a glamorous hotel.
Local Coffee | This weekend we were down was the first cold front Texas has had this fall, so I warmed up with an unsweetened coconut milk latte from Local Coffee. (Any coffee shop that has unsweetened coconut milk is a win in my book)
Farmers Market | With my latte in hand, we strolled the farmers market booths. I live for local markets and this was didn't disappoint. So many sweet entrepreneurs and lots of families and pups.
Supper | When we were ready for lunch, we popped into Supper. Oh man, y'all. This place is a 1920's dream. We weren't all that hungry after filling up at Ocho, but we just had to experience this place. So we shared the chicken breast with asparagus on a mixed greens salad with lemon vinaigrette and my gosh it was phenomenal. So simple yet so fresh and flavorful. Kindest regards to the chef because every piece of it was perfection. Also whether or not you eat at Supper, you absolutely need to stroll through Hotel Emma. The way they've remade an old brewery…it is a piece of art to say the least.
Lick Honest Ice Creams | And who cares if you're actually hungry when there's an organic ice cream shop next door? Lick makes all of their flavors with wholesome, all natural ingredients. They source all their milks from grass-fed cows and they've got some amazing vegan coconut milk options. The Caramel Salt Lick is to die for and the Vegan Chocolate Chocolate is by far the best coconut milk ice cream I've ever had. Such a fun treat.
Grain Free Haven | Before we hit the road, we grabbed some goodies from the Farmers Market. We stopped at Grain Free Haven for a few paleo peanut butter cookies.
Element Kombucha | And we snagged a lavender spearmint kombucha from Element. Casmir is typically not a fan of booch but he loved this stuff. Great job with the flavor, Element!
We absolutely loved our short 36 hours in historic San Antonio. We saw a few sights, we ate some amazing food, and mostly we just enjoyed celebrating a year of marriage and dreaming of all the many more we have ahead of us. If you're heading to San Antonio, this list should be your starting point. Such great spots!
xx, molls
