I’ve already shared about this stainless steel piece of perfection in my kitchen essentials and in my morning routine, but I love it so much I knew it deserved its own post; So here's my Berkey Water Filter review.
If you’re here, it’s because you care about your health and you want to show up for your brightest life. You consider the quality of ingredients you put into your body, but have you thought about the quality of water you put in it too?
I mean, really, think about it. It’s great if you’re avoiding artificial and inflammatory items in your food, but if you’re drinking water packed with heavy metals and inorganic compounds, you’re still loading your system with junk it has to work to filter out.
As an autoimmune warrior, I’m forever on the quest of supporting my body’s natural detox pathways and reducing the toxic load I’m placing on it. And a couple years ago, when I did some research about water quality, it became clear to me investing in a water purifier I could trust would be one of the easiest and most effective ways I could do that.
I researched many different filters and systems, but nothing compared to the Berkey. We purchased the 3.25-gallon Royal Berkey and it’s been worth every single penny. Here are the 6 reasons I’m totally obsessed:
This thing is a powerhouse. It removes more than 99.999% of viruses and greater than 99.9999% of pathogenic bacteria, while also removing or dramatically reducing protozoa (such as giardia and cryptosporidium), trihalomethanes, inorganic minerals, heavy metals (including arsenic, lead, mercury, chromium), pharmaceutical drugs (including caffeine, Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, Progesterone, Triclosan).
They also have an add-on Flouride Filter you can install that targets fluoride and arsenic in the water and removes at rates up to 99.75%. Studies have shown fluoride to affect thyroid hormone production, so with my Hashimoto’s, I’ve been cautious to reduce my exposure to added flouride and I especially don’t need it in the gallon of water I chug every day.
That Brita filter you’ve got in your fridge? It just can’t compete.

Sounds like a silly one, but I really love that it doesn’t require electricity or anything fancy. We can literally throw it in the car and take it camping with us, but even more, it can come with us to any new home we move into. We looked at a lot of different filter options, and many would be stuck with the home we installed it in, so we liked that the Berkey would always move with us.
Use this calculator to figure out which size is best for your household!
Yes, it’s a large investment up front, but the filters only have to be replaced every 6,000 gallons. 6,000! Even if you go through 3 gallons a day, that covers 2,000 days which means you only need to buy replacement filters every 5 years, 5 months, 3 weeks and 2 days. That’s just 2 cents per gallon or 6 cents per day. I know it might seem like the $30 filter you can get at Target is cheaper, but in the long run it’s definitely not.
I love that my Berkey is made of quality, low-impact materials like stainless steel that will last a lifetime. It’s helped us not even consider needing to purchase single-use plastic water bottles, but it’s also helped us not rely on plastic filters we need to replace every few months.
Seriously, it doesn’t get easier than this. I fill it up with water from the sink every other day and let gravity and the filters work their magic. I clean it with my Branch Basics cleaner (you can use code MOLLIE for 15% off your starter kit!) and a scrub sponge every 6 months, and I’ll have to replace the filters every 5-ish years. And that’s it.
You just can’t find better-tasting water. It’s helped me now be so much more sensitive to non-clean water because I now know what truly pure water really tastes like: nothing. I don’t even like using ice in my water at home because our fridge’s filter just can’t compare and it makes my water taste less than perfect.
There they are: six powerful, easy, convincing reasons I’m telling everyone and their mom to buy a Berkey. Are you not convinced? If you’re not, just come on over and I’ll give you a sample of how good Berkey water tastes — you’ll be a convert for life.
PS — Be cautious of unauthorized Berkey dealers, because there are sadly lots of fakers out there. We all know I’m a huge fan of Amazon, but I recommend ordering straight from their site so you know you’re getting the real deal.
PPS — This post is not sponsored, but I am a Berkey partner because I am so wildly obsessed so I do make a small commission if you purchase through this link. Think of it as a thank you for introducing you to the life-changing magic of Berkey. It’s an easy way to support this blog and help me continue to show up and share valuable content for y’all!
Ever since you told me about this, this has been on my list of things to look into – thank for this post!! What size do you have at home?
Yes, it’s the BEST. We have the Royal Berkey- the 3.25 gallon. I find we refill it about every-other-day.
Mollie – Thanks for posting this. My husband and I have been considering this purchase for about a month and have been eagerly awaiting this post as part of our consideration process! For awhile we were drinking reverse osmosis water and had to add back electrolytes because they were stripped out in the filtration process. Does the Berkey require this?
Oh good I’m so glad to hear y’all have been doing this research; great job for thinking through these things – you’re ahead of the game!
The great thing about the Berkey is it filters out all the bad stuff but leaves the important minerals and electrolytes intact! There’s more info here: https://www.berkeyfilters.com/pages/do-berkey-water-filters-remove-minerals
If you do end up buying one, come back and let me know what you think! I’m sure you’ll love it.
